A PDF that's mostly images — scanned documents, photo albums, Canva designs, brochures — can be 10× larger than a text-only PDF of the same page count. The good news: image-based PDFs also compress far more dramatically. A 20MB scanned document can become 2MB without any visible quality loss.

Why Image PDFs Are So Much Larger

A text-only PDF stores content as character codes — a page of text is essentially a list of letter codes, font references, and coordinates. That's very efficient: a 50-page text document might be 200KB.

An image-based PDF stores content as pixel data. Every pixel on every page needs a colour value. An A4 page at 300 DPI contains 4,961 × 7,016 = roughly 35 million pixels. At 3 bytes per pixel (RGB), that's 100MB of raw data per page before any compression. JPEG compression reduces that to 1–5MB per page — which is why a 10-page scanned document is easily 20–50MB.

Why image PDFs compress so well

The same JPEG compression that makes image PDFs large is also what makes them compress so effectively. Reducing from 300 DPI to 150 DPI, or from 90% JPEG quality to 60% JPEG quality, produces files that look identical on screen but are 60–80% smaller. Text PDFs don't have this headroom — they're already very efficient.

Scanned Documents

Scanned documents are the most common image PDF — IC copies, bank statements, receipts, medical reports, signed contracts. They're also the easiest to compress dramatically.

Photo Collections & Albums

PDFs used as photo albums or picture collections are among the largest PDFs users encounter — 100MB+ files are common. They also compress dramatically.

⚠️ Don't compress print-ready files

If your image PDF will be sent to a printer (for professional printing, business cards, brochures), do not compress it with ShrinkPDF. Print production requires 300 DPI or higher. Compressing a print-ready file reduces it to screen resolution, which prints blurry. Only compress if you're sharing or submitting digitally.

Design Files (Canva, InDesign, Illustrator)

PDFs exported from design tools are image-based even when they contain text — the design application rasterises everything to produce a consistent visual output. A 1-page Canva resume is a 1-page image, not a text document.

Mixed Content PDFs (Text + Embedded Images)

Reports, presentations, and academic papers often mix text content with embedded charts, photos, and diagrams. These compress less dramatically than pure image PDFs but still significantly.

For mixed content, Balanced compression is almost always the right choice. It compresses the image portions of each page effectively while preserving the overall layout quality. Maximum may make text portions slightly soft in some documents.

If your mixed PDF has a few very large images that are making the entire document oversized, consider: extracting only the image pages using the Split PDF tool, then using a lower compression level on those pages specifically.

FAQ

Will compressing a scanned document make it harder to read?
At Balanced compression, no — for typical document scans at 150–300 DPI, the text remains clearly readable. At Maximum compression, very fine text (under 8pt) or handwriting may show slight softness when zoomed in closely. At normal viewing size (100% on screen), the document looks the same. For portal submissions, Maximum is almost always fine — reviewers look at the document content, not its compression level.
Why does my PDF with just a few photos compress by 85%, but my text PDF only compresses by 10%?
Image data is inherently redundant — photos contain neighbouring pixels that are similar in colour, which compression exploits heavily. Text is already stored efficiently as character codes in a text PDF, so there's less redundancy to remove. This is normal and expected. The compression technique (re-rendering at lower DPI) is far more effective on image content than on text content.
My 80-page scanned report is 200MB. Can ShrinkPDF handle it?
Yes — there's no file size limit. Processing time will be longer (potentially 2–5 minutes for an 80-page document, depending on your device). Keep the browser tab open and in the foreground during compression. The result will typically be 20–30MB at Maximum compression — around 85–90% smaller.
After compression, the PDF images look the same. Did it actually compress?
Yes. The compression algorithm targets resolution and JPEG quality settings that reduce file size while staying within the threshold where human vision can detect a difference. Screen resolution is 72–96 DPI, but most scans and design exports are 144–300 DPI — compressing to 96–120 DPI produces a file that looks identical on screen but is 70–85% smaller. Check the file size shown in the result card to confirm the reduction.
