Why Canva PDFs Are So Large

Canva is a design tool — it's built to produce visually rich output. When you export a PDF from Canva, every page is rendered as a full-resolution raster image at 144 DPI or higher, with all design elements (backgrounds, gradients, photos, illustrations) embedded as image data.

This is fundamentally different from a Word or Google Docs PDF, where text is stored as characters (tiny) and images are only embedded where you explicitly place them. A Canva page is entirely image data, even if it looks like it's "just text on a coloured background."

Why the "Print" export is always the largest

Canva's PDF Print export targets 300 DPI — print quality. A single A4 page at 300 DPI in full colour is roughly 8–26MB of raw image data before any compression. Canva applies JPEG compression internally, but even compressed, a single print-quality Canva page is typically 1–4MB. A 5-page resume or presentation can easily reach 15–20MB.

Fix 1: Compress After Exporting (Recommended)

The fastest and most reliable fix is to export from Canva normally, then run the PDF through ShrinkPDF. This takes about 30 seconds and typically reduces a Canva PDF by 70–85%.

Export from Canva

In Canva, click Share → Download → PDF Standard (not PDF Print, unless you specifically need print quality). PDF Standard is lower DPI and already produces smaller files.

⚠️ One thing to know about compressed Canva PDFs

After compression, the PDF is re-rendered as an image — text is no longer selectable or searchable. For a resume being submitted to a recruiter's email or portal, this doesn't matter. For a document that needs to be copy-pasted or searched by the recipient, share the original Canva PDF separately.

Fix 2: Change Export Settings in Canva

Before exporting, Canva gives you some control over file size. These settings don't eliminate the need for compression, but they reduce the starting size.

Choose PDF Standard, not PDF Print. Standard targets ~96–144 DPI (screen quality); Print targets 300 DPI (print quality). For anything being submitted digitally, Standard is appropriate and is 3–5× smaller than Print.
Flatten the PDF. In Canva's download dialog, enable "Flatten PDF" if the option appears. This merges all layers and removes embedded edit data, which can shave 10–30% off the file size.
