Compress PDF for Printing — What DPI You Actually Need
The question isn't whether to compress before printing — it's whether your print use case requires the high resolution that compression removes. For most office printing, compression is completely safe. For professional print production, it isn't. Here's exactly where the line is.

When It's Safe to Compress Before Printing
- Office documents: Reports, contracts, letters, and forms printed on a standard laser or inkjet printer. Text prints perfectly; image quality is acceptable at A4 size.
- Presentation handouts: Slides printed as A4 handouts. Images look fine at normal print size — softness only becomes visible when the printed page is viewed very close up.
- Scanned documents for archiving: Compressing before printing a reference copy is fine — text remains fully legible.
- Invoices, receipts, certificates: Text-heavy, so compression has no visible impact on print quality.
When NOT to Compress Before Printing
- Brochures and marketing materials: Images at 96 DPI will print noticeably softer than the 300 DPI standard for commercial print.
- Photo books or portfolios: Photo quality is the point — compression defeats the purpose.
- Business cards: Small size means every pixel matters — needs 300+ DPI.
- Large format prints (A1, A0, banners): Actually fine at lower DPI because they're viewed from a distance, but if the file already contains high-resolution imagery, there's no benefit to compressing before sending to a print shop.
Text vs Images in Print
This is the key distinction that determines whether compression matters for your print job:
- In the original PDF, text is vector-based: it prints at the maximum resolution of your printer, regardless of any DPI setting, because there's no pixel grid to begin with.
- ShrinkPDF's compression re-renders every page as an image — including text pages. Once compressed, what used to be vector text becomes a raster image at whatever DPI that level targets (as low as ~72 DPI at Maximum). On screen this is hard to notice; printed, low-DPI raster text can look visibly softer or fuzzier than the crisp vector text in the original, especially on smaller fonts.
