ShrinkPDF was built by a small independent team who got tired of the same problems everyone faces with PDF tools: file size caps on the free tier, mandatory account registration, watermarks on the output, and tools that upload your sensitive documents to servers you know nothing about.

PDF file size limits are a universal frustration. Government portals, university application systems, job application portals, email servers — all of them impose limits that your documents routinely exceed. A scanned transcript, a tax filing, a signed contract: they all run into the same wall.
Most free PDF compressors are either capped at 10–20MB on the free tier, require account registration, add watermarks to the output, or — most importantly — upload your documents to their servers. For payslips, tax filings, identity documents, and medical records, that last point matters a great deal.
ShrinkPDF processes everything in your browser. Your files never leave your device. That's the core reason it exists.
ShrinkPDF uses pdf-lib, an open-source JavaScript library, to process your PDF entirely within your browser. When you select a file, it is loaded into your browser's memory — it is never sent over the internet to any server.
Depending on the compression level you choose, the tool reduces embedded image resolution (from 300 DPI to approximately 150 DPI at Maximum), strips unused font subsets, removes revision history and hidden metadata, and re-encodes the document structure. Text is stored as vector data and is never affected by compression — it remains perfectly sharp regardless of the level chosen.
The compressed PDF is generated in your browser and offered as a direct download. Once you close the tab or refresh the page, all file data is cleared from browser memory automatically.
